Goodbye Winnipeg, Heeellllllo Vancouver!

As soon as I got back from California it was back to real life with exam week......wooooo (just soooo much excitement). Exam week was short but painful and I got through with little time to spare to get ready for my adventure to Vancouver.  Highlights of the week include killer rock band night, filming a helmet saftey commercial, Bur Oak Time trial, awesome birthday bon fire, 12 hours to pack up my life, drinks at the Paw with ma gurls, and 2 intense days of driving to Van-city.
Specifically I'm super stoked on the Bur Oak Time trial where I posted a sub 20 minute time, a goal and a new personal best of mine. Woooo!!!
My dad helped me drive out to Vancouver and we were determined to make it out here in 2 days.  We got delayed on the way to Canmore with high speed head winds, and just 10 km out of Golden we were delayed 4 hours by a disgusting truck accident (included pig carcasses, and there was blood everywhere), however we made it here safe and sound.

Trek Red Truck Training Camp 2012

Trek Red Truck holds an annual training camp down in Santa Rosa California for both the elite team and the masters riders.  Let me just say it was EPIC. I have never spent so much time on a bike, and done so many kilometers in one week, with just that much elevation.  We averaged 100 km a day, and every morning pre ride Matt would say " 100  km, 3 hrs".

I had come into the camp with literally no knowledge of what we were doing (besides riding bikes), where we were staying, or how we would eat.  Needless to say I wasn't disappointed.  We stayed in the gorgeous house up on the hill in Santa Rosa, rode "100 km, 3 hrs" in the mornings, and hung out by the pool post ride (unfortunately wasn't warm enough to swim in).  And the cherry on top of the cake was Marcia who cooked the most amazing food for 20 of us all week.

Santa Rosa is 2 hours north of the San Fransico airport, and located mostly in wine country.  We were able to make it out to the coast a couple of times, and rolled through the rolling Sonoma Valley all of the other times.  Each ride we did was different from the last, and were all so gorgeous.

The first day we hit the coast, and there were some huge ass waves.  It was so cool and I couldn't stop smiling (I've never been on the west coast before)

The trees were sideways.

Duck Ride coffee stop.

So Mark James (owner of Red Truck beer) organizes a ride each year called the duck ride.  Where the masters team rides south, climbs up 12 km, desencdes on this sketcy/AWESOME descent, and then stops in St. Helena for a duck.  After having some delicious duck and lots of wine, theres an even steeper (albeit shorter 8 km) climb back over the mountains back home.  Though it sounds extremly painful (which I'm sure it was), everyone has a great time, and lets be serious it makes for a strange training camp tale.

Kings Ridge Ride (2, 15 km climbs and Colemans pass (10 km), which is part of this years Tour of California)

Pine Flats ride was the last day.

All week there was a lot of ping ponging going on in preparation for Janky Cup 2012.  i suck so I was out the first round. The final round was contested by Dustin and Tyle, and Dustin the king came out on top.. not so much of a surprise.

Vacationoni

Since last week wasn't reading week, I decided that it would be super fun to go out to Canmore and surprise one of my friends for no apparent reason, and maybe do some boarding/xc skiing.

So I left directly from South Carolina at 3 am. Not that I slept that much that night anyways, and didn't get to Canmore till 12 am (mountain time). I got home just after noon and then spent a couple of hours back at home re packing for my vacation out in the west. It was back to the airport at 5 for my thrid plane ride of the day to Calgs. I had coordinated with my friend Amanda Ammar (who just hours earlier won the KESKI in Gatineau, a 53 km skate ski race......YA DUDE SO STOKED), to fly in this evening because she also get back from her eastern ski tour.

FOXY FOXY

Anyways, its been a super fun week chilling at the Ammar-Butler-Sometimes Groneveld household, baking, family guy marathoning, home working, and cross country skiing.

Amanda and I went skiing 3 times this week and she pretty much totally pwned me each time. However as the week went by I was feeling more recovered, and started to actually be able to keep up.

I unfourtunatly didn't get a chance to go snowboarding this week, for a lack of automobile syndrome, so DJ bootz and I had alot of bonding time :)

South Carolina 2012

Again this year I had the pleasure of attending the Canadian Women's Endurance Camp down in Seneca, South Carolina. I had such a great time last year, that I thought that I'd try and go again this year.

My trip had a little bit of a rocky start with a layover in Chicago. It appears that the one time I'm going to experience a snow storm this summer, would be in the middle of my flights. The flight into Chicago was good until we actually got into Chicago where it was full on blizzard mode. Needless to say my flight to Greenville was cancelled and I had to spend the night in the hotel, all by my lonesome.

Early next morning I trucked it over to the airport early early, to make sure I'd make my flight on time. The airport was completely packed with all the other people whose flights were cancelled the day before. It would have been completely fine except for United had kept my baggage overnight, so I was overly worried that it wasn't going to make it to Greenville with me. Especially since I had been changed to two different airlines before boarding any plane that morning. The most stressful part of flying with american airlines is that i always feel like my luggage is going to get lost. However after all that I made it to Greenville unscathed and so did my luggage.

Since I had spent the night in Chicago I missed the first day of riding (which i heard was super windy anyways), so I started the second somewhat fresh.

Day 2: Team Time Trial work. A pretty gorgeous day, and DK put most of the mountain bikers together on a team so we really rocked the boat.

Day 3: Whitewater Falls. This is a 10 mile climb with a little bit of down on the way up, and at the very tip top is the steepest part. My bike unfortunately doesn't have a compact and my climbing, so it was a rough go, but i made it and it rocked. One of my favorite reasons for doing a climb is so I can descend with my super skillz. This a pretty fun descend too with lots of tight corners. DK put us into three different self selecting groups to descend so we would have less of a chance of crashing. We descended without crashes (yay!). This day we ended up doing 100 km which was awesome.

Day 4: Rest Day! It rained today, so it was a perfect day to take it off. We rode a cute 1 hour loop in a forest which was a nice change from all of the other roads we were riding on.

Day 5: INDIVIDUAL TT! The previous night we had a sport come and speak to us about race prep and mental skills so we had a chance to put them to use on this day with the ITT. We rode out to the same place, though by a different less hilly route. Warmed up, and then TT'd! I felt I had a pretty good TT, I was focused the whole time and I "rolled out the carpet" as some might say. I ended up doing it 14 seconds faster than last year, which is at least an improvement. We also ended up doing a recovery ride in the evening which was awesome and we just blasted Ri-ri from the Iphone the whole time!

Day 6: Endurance Ride. Today was by far the hardest out of the whole week. It was yet another rainy day, however the rain stopped a half hour into our ride. I just had a total suffer fest at the back today and just kept running low on energy. To make matter worse we semi got lost, and instead of the 2 hour ride we were supposed to do, it got extended to three hours. Anyways we got home and somehow I snuck into the shower first, leading to hot water :D.

Gab also made cupcake for next eve's potluck and she was nice enough to buy all the decorating supplies for us to do it with so we had spent the evening in the best way.

Day 7: Sasafrass. This was our longest day of the week, and my favorite. To start off we had some of the most gorgeous weather all week, which made this ride much more bearable (last year it was rainy and just plain miserable and I had to duck out early). The main highlight of the ride is a climb called Sasafrass. It super steep and takes about 40 min to complete. Steep enough that we had to weave back and forth to make it up (that is if you don't have a comapct). Anyways its awesome and I love hardass shit like that so I totally rocked it and and this year we made it all the way to the top.
The rest of the day was super chill and rexlaxed, becuase once we had finished the climb everyone's stress just fell off their shoulders. By the end we were all getting super tired, and Kinley and I started singing and getting rambuckous(quoting rage comics). Once I got off the bike my legs were just jello, and luckly I had a massage that evening. Karlee, Caeli, and I all spent some time in the beautiful lake that just happened to be in the backyard of the lake house we were staying in.

Day 8: Final Day/ Sprints. Today was the final day so we took it pretty chill and went out to do a sprint workout near the abadonded diner. It ended up being another gorgeous day (sunny and warm enough for shorts and jersey) and did about 6 sprints. By the end of our sprint workout I knew my legs were done for the week and just went easy till the end.

I'm sad for the camp to be over, because I met a lot of great girls again this time around, and also saw some friends I don't get to see often, but it's regrettably time to go back to Canada, and move onto the next adventure of Canmore for Reading week. The race season starts in just over 2 months, and as each day approaches I just get that more excited. I'll be moving out to Vancouver just as April ends to start the season with a new team, Trek Red Truck, with their première year of mountain biking.

The Deep South

A certain nameless someone didn't want me to leave for a week and a half. Such a cutie.

Mid Feb I left for the national team development camp in South Carolina, wooo party. On the way the way to SC, some people thought it would be funny if they forgot my bike behind in Minneapolis.

Awesome.

However that afternoon I wasn't going to be picked up until 5 hours after my flight arrived, so my bike showed up soon after, and i had a fun filled afternoon with the my favorite cute physicists.
Compared to its start, the rest of the week was absolutely amazing. We started out with a 2 hour endurance ride on Friday to get out legs moving, and then a 3 hour ride on Saturday to get some more hours.

The real fun started on Monday when we attacked the first climb of the week, Whitewater falls. This camp was the first time I decide not to detach my derailleur of course the hanger gets bent, boooooo. So this left me without my 25 till Scotty came and saved the day on Tuesday. Needless to say I was stuck with a 23 while everyone else had their 25 or 27 on a lovely steep 10 mile climb. I'll tell you this my legs definitely were having a party once that climb was over. The descent down was happy days until we hit a pretty sharp corner and a gust of wind which knocked one of the girls to a pot hole, which led to her having a very unexpected meeting with the ditch and some trees and leaves. All was good, no broken bones. However we continued to descend in a much more careful state.

Tuesday was "recovery" day. A bunch of use decided that we wanted to go on a coffee ride. Unfortunately the nearest coffee shop was in Clemson, 15 miles away. What was supposed to be a rest day turned into a very long easy effort, with a sugar high. This day especially was gorgeous sunny hot day, so i think we were all pleased to get coffee and some sun.

Thursday was one of those epic days. 2 hours to the climb, 20% grade for 30 minuets, and to top it off I think i bonked on the way there. Wow, such a great bike rider. Anyways that was the only day that was cold and cloudy. Definitely an epic day :).

On the way to the climb. You can already see the length of the hills. yayayaya.

After the climb. Destruction.

Road of Carnage. Most of the hill was ten times worse than this.

Friday was a nice change. Fun in the sun and a little game of ride faster than a pack of dogs with a little bit of lets get lost in South Carolina. Twas a good day.

The rest of the week was followed by several days of sunshine and more amazing rides.

The last morning was just beautiful.

To my surprise when I landed in Greenville and while were riding around, it was quite apparent that all the grass was brown and crabby (obviously its not like you could see anything else). On the last day Katie and I were riding around and we finally found some green grass.

LASAGNA!
